How to market yourself on the Web

In Ms. Butera's Web design class we have learned various different ways to market ourselves on the web. This includes making a blog and/or creating a Wikispaces page like we all had to do. Another way to market yourself is through other social media websites like Twitter and Facebook. Marketing yourself on the web can be very helpful when someone is trying to find out information about you (colleges, jobs, etc).

Developing a Web Page

These past couple of weeks my class has learned how to develop a web page. We have learned that web pages are made in HTML format. To do this, you need to put your work on the notepad and the file must be named "index html" in order for it to save correctly.
Some of the work we have done has been challenging for me to understand like the amount of codes that you need to know. They are all similar and it is sometimes confusing.
The website http://www.w3schools.com/ has helped me tremendously during this time. This website helps you understand the codes and teaches you the correct way to use them.

Digital Respect

I feel that this module was the most useful one we have done. This module was about cyber bullying and how it can effect someones life. People respond differently from being bullied. Some may ignore it, while others may harm themselves. If you experience being bullied, the best thing to do is tell an adult. Most adults would know what to do in the situation. Most bully's do not even realize they are bullying someone at first. Its great how most teens want to stop cyber bullying. Cyber bullying is a crime so, remember to think before you speak.

Multimedia Products and the Web

I have learned many things from the Multimedia Products and the Web module. Downloading illegal music and movies can be very dangerous. You can get charged with thousands of dollars that effect your life tremendously. I also learned that almost anything can be copyrighted. It is illegal to put copyrighted information up on the web for people to download for free.Critical Commentary- The process of using copyrighted material to try to prove a point. Lastly, I learned that a good blog should have good security and storage capacity features.

Internet Resources and Credibility

I have learned many things from the "Internet Resources and Credibility" module. One thing I learned is the dangers of plagiarizing. Plagiarizing can effect your life in so many ways. It can effect your grade, reputation and future. Another thing I learned is if the URL has a domain of .biz, .com, .net, .org, it may not be a reliable source. Also the website may not be a reliable source if the author of the website does not use correct grammar, a source page from where they got the information, and if the information is scattered. Meaning, if the website jumps from topic to topic without making sense.

Viral World

You may not know but, when something goes viral on the internet it could happen in the matter of seconds. One thing can travel from one person to another very quickly. From this module, I have learned many things about the viral world. One thing I learned is, it is very easy to catch a virus on your computer or email. If there is an attachment to an email that looks suspicious, do not open it. It is most likely a virus. Another thing I learned is, you should change your password on any account you have each month. It is very easy for hackers to get into your account. Your passwords should consist of capital and lower case letters, numbers, and symbols.

Wireless Communications

I have learned many things from our "Wireless Communications" lesson. Wireless communications is the transfer of information between two or more points that are not connected by an electrical conductor. Some examples of Wireless Communications are cellphones, radios, Bluetooth, etc. Wireless communications can be used or accessed through the phone towers you may see in your neighborhood. Sometimes there can be interference when using your cell phone if there are physical barriers between the tower or when too many people try to access the same tower at the same time.

Choosing a Computer

Choosing a computer can be an easy task, if you know what your are looking for. You should start by telling the sales person at the computer store exactly what you are looking for.  If you are looking for a portable computer, a laptop may be requested. You should want to know how much data / information the computer can store. Also, you may need a hard drive. A hard drive is what stores all your data. You would need a good hard drive if you are looking to download pictures, music, Microsoft office, etc.

Podcast

Podcast- a multimedia digital file made available on the Internet for downloading to a portable media player, computer, etc.

A teacher may want to add a podcast to their website because it can allow their students to look on their blog and get links and instructions to the lesson. Using a podcast can also allow someone to post a video recording of their voice introducing themselves and explaining what their blog may be about.

Softball

Softball season for my school is starting in a few weeks. I am very excited because softball is literally my life. I've played softball for about 10 years now. As a freshman (last year), I made the varsity team for my school. I am the starting pitcher for this season. Not only do I play for my high school but I also play for a travel team.

Softball is a stress reliever for me. Being on the field clears my mind and allows me to forget my problems. Last season I faced a lot of obstacles. During basketball season I fractured my foot. I was in a boot for about 4 weeks and missed some of the first practices for softball. My foot still hurts now, but the doctor said that this can be a pain that doesn't go away for a year or two. Another obstacle I faced last season is when I broke my nose. I was catching for my friend and was not wearing a helmet. I needed surgery and I missed the last two games of our regular season. Thankfully I was able to play in playoffs.

Overcoming these obstacles has been very hard. Like I said, my foot still hurts so sometimes it effects my performance while playing other sports. Trying to overcome my broken nose has been an obstacle too. Sometimes I get anxiety when not wearing a helmet while doing a drill of some sort. Me breaking my nose has been the most painful experience I had ever had to go through. I am hoping that this season is very successful and I hope that I don't experience any more injuries any time soon.

Benefits to having an RSS feed is it solves problems for people who usually use the web and It allows you to easily stay informed by retrieving the latest content from the sites you are interested in. -http://www.whatisrss.com/

Netiquette

Netiquette- the correct or acceptable way of communicating on the Internet.

It is important to be a good Netiquette because while you talk through the internet you want to sound intelligent and well put together. Using proper grammar, avoiding abbreviations and not using all capital letters are some ways you can improve your netiquette use.

Online situations where you would use Netiquette is emails, essays, letters, and talking to a professor or boss online.

Digital Footprints

Digital Footprint-A digital footprint is the data trail left by the interactions in a digital environment; including the use of TV, mobile phone, the World Wide Web, the internet and other connected devices and sensors.

One way you can improve your digital footprint is by making a blog. This blog can include posts about your life, posts about the job you would like to have and basically whatever you want. Another way you can improve your digital footprint is to write a Press Release. "A Press Release is a who, what, when, where about an event or activity that you are involved with" said by Cindy Ratzlaff in her video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AdWmhZsJQHo. The last way you can improve your digital footprint is to write an Ebook. An Ebook is an online/ digital book explaining different was 'how to' do things.

Academic Integrity

Academic Integrity is a code of honor. Meaning you must be honest when doing your work and you may not share your ideas with other students. If you use someone else's work you must give them credit by citing.

One thing I learned from the video is that you can get suspended for plagiarizing. Another thing I learned was that you must cite the persons work that you got your information from, you can not just use quotation marks. And the last thing I learned from the video is once you get the information you should write it down right away. This is because it is very easy to forget what you learned if you go to do something else.

What is a Blog?

Blog- a personal website or web page on which an individual records opinions, links to other sites, etc. on a regular basis.

A blog is a page where someone posts opinions, personal experiences, links to other sites, pictures, and many more.

On twitter I follow mostly my friends but I also follow some celebrities. Those celebrities consist of Kendall and Kylie Jenner, Ariana Grande, and a few others.

Blogging could be used to support our learning process. This includes looking at other peoples blogs and learning new information that they posted about. Some multimedia sources that this can include are, Facebook, twitter, and tumblr.

I like Perez Hilton's blog about celebrity gossip. The topics and the celebrity's he uses are a huge interest to me. http://butera-bdk1.wikispaces.com/blog+assignments. I also like a blog about Kylie and Kendall Jenner. This blog includes fun pictures and stories of them. I like this blog because it relates to most teenage girls like myself. http://kendallandkylie.celebuzz.com/
